The Chief Secretary for Administration, Chan Kwok-ki, said in a radio program today (Feb. 1) that the market is booming during the Chinese New Year, and hotels and the retail sector have reflected good business.
Chan pointed out that the government attaches great importance to cross-boundary transportation during festive seasons. As there are no large-scale New Year's Eve activities organized by the government or the community, the government has decided that there is no need to extend the operating hours of the border control points, and at the same time, it has specially arranged overnight buses at the Sheung Shui Station to pick up members of the public in need of transportation.
He said the authorities considered that the overall traffic this Chinese New Year was smooth and more or less as expected, and the overnight buses at the Sheung Shui Station had also served their purpose.
Chan said there were 45 million visitor arrivals last year, an increase of 30% over the previous year, and the number of visitors from outside Hong Kong also increased by more than 10% between the Chinese New Year's Eve and the fourth day of the Chinese New Year this year.
