
Washington's Ronald Reagan National Airport said on Wednesday (Jan. 29 local time) that all takeoffs and landings are halted.
"All takeoffs and landings have been halted at DCA. Emergency personnel are responding to an aircraft incident on the airfield. The terminal remains open. Will update," the airport wrote on social platform X.
Washington's fire department said that there was a confirmed small aircraft down in the Potomac River vicinity of the airport.
The District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department (DCFD) announced on social media that a small plane had crashed into the Potomac River near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, and firefighters had arrived.
The downed aircraft was American Airlines Flight AA5342, a Bombardier CRJ700. According to American Airlines, there were approximately 60 passengers on board.
A spokesperson for the White House stated that earlier that day, a military helicopter was suspected to have collided with a small plane near the Airport. The spokesperson indicated that President Donald Trump has been informed of the incident and is being briefed on the developments.
