Citybus has introduced a specialized training program to help its drivers better understand and meet the needs of elderly passengers. Since the program's rollout last year, more than 850 bus captains have completed the one-day training session.
As part of the training, drivers wear special outfits and goggles that limit their vision and mobility and carry canes to simulate the challenges senior passengers face when using public transportation. Elderly residents were also invited to these sessions to share their experiences and provide feedback on how drivers can improve safety and comfort during their journeys.
“Currently, Citybus is the only bus operator in Hong Kong that provides such training to our bus captains. We will continue to provide this kind of training. We forecast that by 2026, all of our 4,000 [drivers] will have attended such training to teach them how to take care of our elderly passengers in Hong Kong,” said Roger Wong, General Manager of Citybus.
In addition to training initiatives, Citybus is addressing its staffing needs. Although the company recorded a net increase of over 400 drivers last year, there are still about 100 vacant bus captain positions. To tackle this, Citybus has launched various recruitment campaigns, including a program in August last year to hire drivers for a three-day workweek.
The campaign attracted over 1,000 applications, leading to the hiring and training of 160 new drivers. Wong emphasized that recruitment remains a priority, and the company will continue to explore innovative strategies to attract prospective employees.
