Starting Monday (Jan. 20), the mainland's "Trade-in" mobile phone subsidy policy officially took effect. Under this initiative, consumers purchasing mobile phones, tablets, and smartwatches priced up to 6,000 RMB will receive a subsidy of up to 500 RMB per item.
Reports indicate that most Apple smartphones, including the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16, are eligible for the national subsidy. For instance, the 256GB iPhone 16 can be purchased for only 5,499 RMB after the subsidy, making it the lowest price globally compared to the U.S. market. In contrast, the official price for the same iPhone 16 model in Hong Kong is HK$7,699, equivalent to approximately 7,093 RMB.
Additionally, some netizens have noted that the price of the 128GB iPhone 13 dropped to just 2,999 RMB after the subsidy, reaching a historical low.
Currently, cities like Beijing have initiated subsidies for the purchase of mobile phones, tablets, and smartwatches, with more regions expected to follow suit shortly. Estimates suggest that under the new subsidy policy, mobile phone sales in mainland China could reach 300 million units this year.
