Since the resurgence of scam camps in Myanmar, at least 28 Hong Kong residents have been lured to work in telecommunication fraud operations in parks since the second quarter of last year. Among these victims, 11 individuals remain trapped and un-rescued.
Families who suspect their loved ones to be sold as "piglets" (a colloquial expression in Chinese for human trafficking victims) visited the Myanmar Consulate General in Hong Kong today (Jan. 20). They submitted a petition letter, urging the Myanmar government to assist in the rescue efforts so that their family members can return to Hong Kong safely as soon as possible.
In a press statement, Kelvin, a representative of the victim family, revealed that his family member claimed to go to Japan for overseas purchase half a year ago, but their final destination turned out to be Thailand, and were subsequently transferred to Myanmar. Kelvin stated that it has been three to four weeks since he communicated with his imprisoned family member last time. His family member was then trapped in a scam park in Myawadi, Myanmar. Kelvin noted that the phone call lasted only a few minutes, during which his family member mentioned that there was a possibility of being transferred to another park, and there has been no contact since then. Kelvin expressed he hoped to seek assistance from the Myanmar government to rescue his family member.
Kelvin mentioned that no ransom demands have been received so far, but he did not rule out the possibility of paying a ransom to bring his family member back home.
