Water pipe bursts in Shau Kei Wan, with water column shooting 10 meters high

(FB)

At the early morning of today (Jan. 20), an underground water pipe burst at the junction of Nam On Street and Sun Sing Street in Shau Kei Wan.

The water column shot up to 10 meters high in the air, and a seven person car parked on the roadside was suspected to have been hit by flying bricks at the rear of the car, resulting in a window explosion. The exterior walls of nearby buildings were also washed away by water columns, and the exterior walls and glass windows of a nursing home located on the second floor of the building were soaked. Fortunately, the windows were tightly closed when the incident occurred, and the water did not flow into the hospital.

After investigation, it was confirmed that the water pipe involved was a 300mm diameter saltwater supply pipe, and the water supply to the relevant pipes was suspended. After water supply dispatch, there is currently no impact on the nearby flushing water supply.

Due to the impact of the accident, a section of pedestrian walkway on Nam On Street needs to be temporarily closed to facilitate emergency maintenance work. The engineering team of the Water Supplies Department is making every effort to repair and restore the relevant flushing water supply and open the affected pedestrian paths as soon as possible. The authorities also apologize for the inconvenience caused to the public by the accident.

The Water Supplies Department is contacting the owners of the affected vehicles in the accident to provide the necessary support.
