Cross-boundary high-speed rail expands ahead of Lunar New Year: Over 130 daily trains and direct access to 94 mainland cities
With the Lunar New Year just around the corner, a surge in cross-boundary travel is underway. According to the China Railway Guangzhou Group, the Hong Kong-Guangdong high-speed rail now operates more than 130 daily trains, including overnight sleeper services connecting HK to Beijing and Shanghai. In just the first four days of the Spring Festival travel rush, the line recorded over 660,000 cross-boundary passengers.
Since January, the HK high-speed rail network has expanded its northern reach, now offering direct access to 94 mainland cities. This marks a significant increase compared to the 44 stations available when the rail service first launched in 2018. The expansion has not only shortened travel times but also fostered greater regional connectivity, boosting economic development and facilitating the exchange of people and resources between HK and the mainland.
The improved rail network creates new opportunities for economic cooperation. HK businesses can now more easily access the mainland market, while mainland enterprises can utilize HK as a platform to expand globally. This deepened economic collaboration energizes regional growth and drives mutual development between the two regions.
Additionally, the convenience of enhanced rail connectivity promotes more frequent travel between HK and the mainland. This benefits the tourism industry, facilitates talent exchange, and fosters deeper collaboration in areas such as culture, education, and technology.
