HK sees increase in recent false job recruitment advertisements on social media: Ada Chung

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data received 1158 inquiries related to personal data scams last year, representing an increase of over 45% compared to the previous year. Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data, Ada Chung, mentioned on a radio program today (Jan. 17) that the majority of these cases are related to phone scams. For example, scammers impersonate law enforcement agencies, financial companies, and other personnel, calling victims to request money transfers, bank account details, and identity information.

Chung pointed out that recently, there have been many false job advertisements on social media, luring victims with high-paying positions to Southeast Asian cities for fraudulent activities. Some criminals utilize artificial intelligence deepfake technology to produce videos impersonating relatives or friends to deceive victims into giving money, as well as providing personal information such as full names, addresses, and phone numbers. Cases of hijacking instant messaging software have also resurged recently.
