US President Joe Biden has decided to extend the "Deferred Enforced Departure" program for certain Hong Kong residents living in the US for an additional two years, according to American media reports. The program's eligibility criteria have also been broadened to include more residents.
In response, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun addressed the issue during a regular press conference on Jan. 16. Guo stated that the "one country, two systems" principle has achieved internationally recognized success, adding that HK's security, democracy, and civil liberties are now better safeguarded with a brighter developmental future ahead.
Guo emphasized that any attempts to discredit HK or undermine confidence in its governance would fail. He called on the US to respect China's sovereignty and HK's rule of law, abide by principles of international law and norms of international relations, and cease interfering in HK's internal affairs.
