'Selling piglets' | Sources: HK resident abducted to Southeast Asia to be released to HK today
According to the latest report by Hong Kong media today (Jan. 16), one of the abducted Hong Kong individuals in Southeast Asia is expected to be released and return to Hong Kong as soon as today.
A task force led by Deputy Secretary for Security Michael Cheuk Hau-yip returned to Hong Kong and revealed that 12 Hong Kong residents remain detained overseas: 11 in Myanmar and 1 near the Cambodian border. During the trip, the delegation met with representatives from Thailand's Ministry of Justice and heads of law enforcement agencies to exchange information and intelligence. Thai officials expressed strong concern over the issue and pledged to address it promptly.
The Royal Thai Police has established the "Tourist Safety Operations Center" to coordinate with local police and the Tourist Police Bureau. They have also launched the "Thailand Tourist Police" mobile application. By connecting to the internet, tourists can send messages, pictures, and locations to inquire, report incidents, or seek assistance from the police. Even in border areas, they can send out distress signals.
Since the launch of the application, they have received about a thousand emergency requests from last month to date, with approximately 200 cases received on just Monday. However, there is no statistical breakdown of how many of these cases fall under the category of fraud.
