Hong Kong police held a press conference today (Jan. 15) to discuss a scam case involving at least 28 Hong Kong residents lured to a scam camp at the Myanmar-Thailand border, with 12 still unaccounted for. Authorities have arrested a 32-year-old woman suspected of enticing others to Southeast Asia for fraudulent activities.

Police reported that on Dec. 30, 2024, and Jan. 1, 2025, they received missing person reports regarding two women, aged 23 and 21, who disappeared after leaving Hong Kong on Dec. 27, 2024. The women lost contact upon arriving in Thailand and were later contacted by their families, who were demanded to pay a ransom of $28,000 for their release.

On Jan. 11, 2025, both women safely returned to Hong Kong. After meeting with them, police launched an in-depth investigation based on the information provided. It was discovered that a Hong Kong woman had lured them with promises of lucrative rewards for transporting Thai baht cash. Upon arrival in Thailand, their passports were confiscated, and they were taken to a scam camp where they were informed they would be forced to participate in fraudulent activities. The camp was surrounded by barbed wire and guarded by individuals in camouflage uniforms carrying firearms.

Police condemned the arrested woman's actions as despicable and emphasized their determination to combat such crimes, hoping the swift arrest would demonstrate their commitment to law enforcement.
