Legislators call for banning age discrimination in workplace, aim to accelerate and enhance silver economy
The Legislative Council meets today (Jan. 15) to discuss a motion by Election Committee member Tan Yueheng on addressing the aging population and creating an "elderly-friendly" economy.
Chan Hak-ken from the DAB emphasized that the elderly have significantly contributed to society and should not face welfare cuts during fiscal deficits. He urged the government to accelerate the development of the silver economy and create more job opportunities that are friendly to seniors.
Labour Unions' representative Lam Chun-sing highlighted employment barriers for seniors, noting that many face age discrimination without legal protection. He called for legislation to ensure equal treatment in the workplace.
Chan Pui-leung suggested that the government adopt a proactive approach to bond issuance and encourage financial institutions to develop low-risk retirement products. He also stressed the need to engage younger individuals in retirement planning, particularly those in their 30s and 40s, to raise awareness about early financial preparation for retirement.
