Public clinics reach 102% utilization rate, Govt to expand dental care programs
Hong Kong's Secretary for Health, Professor Lo Chung-mau, announced today (Jan. 11) that public dental clinics, which primarily serve patients with urgent needs, are operating at full capacity, with a utilization rate exceeding 102% due to overbooking and standby appointments.
He pointed out that the government is set to expand dental care initiatives this year, including extending coverage of the School Dental Care Service to preschool children.
Lo also said that the government is working with non-governmental organizations to launch a co-payment scheme targeting secondary school students. Discussions with dental organizations regarding pricing and logistics are currently underway, with the program expected to roll out later this year. Additionally, the Community Dental Support Programme, aimed at providing services for low-income elderly residents, is slated for implementation by next year.
