U.S. Special Counsel Jack Smith has concluded that Donald Trump engaged in an "unprecedented criminal effort" to retain power after losing the 2020 presidential election.
A report released on Tuesday outlines Smith's decision to file a four-count indictment against Trump, accusing him of attempting to obstruct the collection and certification of votes following his defeat by Democratic President Joe Biden.
The report notes that Smith's efforts to bring the case to trial were complicated by Trump's subsequent election victory in November, which effectively thwarted these legal proceedings.
Although Trump currently enjoys presidential immunity, the report could provide a legal basis for future prosecutions by his political opponents, and if new evidence or legal adjustments emerge in the future, these charges are likely to be reopened, and Trump may still face the risk of political reckoning beyond his four-year presidency.
