Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly has said the Canadian government is not ruling out any countermeasures to fight U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's tariff threat.
In an interview with CTV that aired Sunday, Joly said that "everything is on the table" when asked specifically whether the government would cut off energy exports to the United States in response to those threats.
The foreign minister said she, together with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc, will meet with the country's provincial premiers to discuss Canada's response, which she will take to Republican lawmakers and key decision-makers in the United States during her planned visit to Washington this week.
She called on every political leader in Canada to come together because "this is not time for division. This is not a time for weakness. This is a time of strength and unity."
"I will be leading, along with Dominic LeBlanc, our reaction to what the Americans will be doing," Joly said.
Local media reported that Canada has been preparing a list of American goods that it could target with retaliatory tariffs if Trump proceeds with his threat to impose 25 percent tariffs on all Canadian imports.
