In 2024, border inspection agencies across China recorded 610 million entries and exits, reflecting the positive impact of the country's expanded visa-free policies and initiatives aimed at increasing openness to global travelers.
Foreign nationals entering China visa-free reached approximately 20.115 million, marking a year-on-year increase of about 112%. Among these, the number of individuals benefiting from transit visa exemptions saw a growth of over 113%.
The year also saw the issuance of 2.578 million permits for residents of Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan to travel to the mainland. Because of the multiple entries policy from Dec. 1, 2024, to the present, there have been 299,000 permits issued for "multiple entries" to Hong Kong. Additionally, 1.04 million Shenzhen residents traveled to Hong Kong, representing a 22.3% increase year-on-year.
From Jan. 1, 2024, to the present, 59,000 permits for weekly travel to Macau were issued, along with over 6,000 permits for multiple entries. Furthermore, 257,000 residents from Zhuhai traveled to Macau, reflecting a 26.1% increase compared to the previous year. This indicates a continuous rise in cross-border travel between the mainland and residents of Hong Kong and Macau.
This figure represents a remarkable 43.9 percent increase compared to the previous year, as reported by the National Immigration Administration on Tuesday (Jan. 14). This surge highlights the growing recognition and appreciation from travelers worldwide for China's efforts to facilitate international mobility.
