S. Korean prepares for second attempt to arrest Yoon Suk-yeol
According to CCTV News, on Jan. 14, South Korean police, the Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials, and the Presidential Security Service held a tripartite meeting to discuss the execution of President Yoon Suk-yeol's second arrest warrant.
Following a failed attempt to arrest Yoon on Jan. 3, authorities have reapplied for an arrest warrant and plan to attempt the arrest again soon. However, Yoon's camp has strongly resisted these efforts. Reports indicate that the presidential security has been reinforcing security around the presidential residence, including installing barbed wire and deploying buses to block access.
There are concerns in South Korea that another attempt to arrest Yoon could lead to physical confrontations or even violent clashes between law enforcement and the Presidential Guard. On Jan. 12, National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik urged that the best way to resolve the current political turmoil is for Yoon to voluntarily cooperate with the investigation to avoid conflict between government agencies.
Analysts suggest that Yoon's camp insists that declaring martial law is legal and argues that judicial proceedings should occur after impeachment hearings, indicating that they may continue to resist law enforcement attempts to arrest him shortly.
