China launches energy-efficient carbon fiber metro train

Qingdao city in east China's Shandong province introduced its new carbon fiber metro train, CETROVO 1.0, into passenger service on Friday (Jan. 10).

This innovative train features a carbon fiber composite body and frame, achieving significant weight reductions-25% for the car body and 50% for the bogie frame, resulting in an overall vehicle weight 11% lighter than conventional trains.

Liu Jinzhu, the chief designer from CRRC Qingdao Sifang Co., Ltd., noted that this design lowers energy consumption by 7% during operation, translating to an annual reduction of approximately 130 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. This reduction is comparable to the environmental benefit of planting around 101 mu (approximately 6.7 hectares) of trees.

The use of carbon fiber materials not only enhances the train's strength and impact resistance but also extends the durability of its structure. The cabin interior boasts an array of carbon fiber elements, including sleek black seats and armrests, which contribute to a modern, high-tech aesthetic. Additionally, the carbon fiber composites improve vibration damping and sound isolation, offering passengers a smoother and more comfortable ride.

Furthermore, the CETROVO 1.0 is equipped with a digital twin-based intelligent maintenance platform called SmartCare. This platform facilitates smart fault detection, real-time health monitoring, and maintenance optimization, ultimately reducing overall repair costs.
