China conducts first drone-based snow enhancement experiment
China conducted its first artificial snow-enhancement experiment using drones in the Kunlun Mountains of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
The operation took place at 3,500 meters, where low oxygen levels complicate catalyst distribution. Drones equipped with long-duration smoke flares successfully ignited at 4,200 meters, releasing the necessary catalysts.
Since early 2024, the Xinjiang weather modification center has carried out 23 similar experiments, accumulating 46 flight hours. The Kunlun Mountains are a vital water source for western China, and effective artificial weather operations can enhance water supplies for agriculture, industry, and residential use while positively impacting the local ecosystem.
