Wildfires devastate world's largest Bunny Museum

In Los Angeles County, California, wildfires fueled by strong winds have continued to rage, destroying thousands of buildings and consuming over 10,000 acres of land.

Among the casualties is the Bunny Museum, which was completely burned down, along with approximately 46,000 rabbit-themed collectibles. Owner Steve Lubanski, who dedicated 40 years to building his collection, tearfully stated that the iconic Altadena old town is gone, expressing the heartbreak felt by rabbit enthusiasts everywhere.

Established in 1998 in Altadena, this private museum was renowned for having the largest and most diverse collection of rabbit-themed toys and art in the world. It was also seen as a testament to a beautiful love story: founders Candace Frazee and Steve Lubanski often exchanged rabbit figurines during their courtship, gradually transforming this gesture of affection into a decades-long collection and exhibition.

Before the fire, the Bunny Museum boasted over 46,000 rabbit-related items, ranging from plush toys and ceramic figurines to contemporary artworks. It was recognized by the Guinness World Records in 1999, 2011, and 2023 as the world's largest bunny museum.

According to the museum's social media accounts, the couple watched helplessly as the wildfire approached. On Tuesday (Jan. 7) evening, as the flames drew near, Lubanski attempted to protect the museum with a hose, but nearby structures collapsed, causing the fire to spread rapidly. The museum ultimately became the last building in the area to be destroyed.

In a hurried evacuation, Lubanski managed to save a few precious items, including the first two rabbits they collected, some antiques, three Guinness World Record certificates, and their two pet rabbits and three cats. Unfortunately, their wedding album and dress were lost to the flames.

Currently, the couple and their pets are staying in a motel, and they plan to rebuild the museum through fundraising efforts once the fires are contained. They also urge fans to be cautious of fraudulent fundraising campaigns online.
