Woman loses HK$2 mn in cryptocurrency scam
A woman has reported a suspected cryptocurrency scam, claiming to have lost around HK$2 million.
The incident occurred around 12 p.m. today (Jan. 9) when she visited the first floor of the Admiralty Centre in Central to file a police report, expressing concerns about her potential fraud.
Police arrived on the scene to investigate. The victim was in a cryptocurrency exchange shop when she reported her suspicions. It was revealed that she had invested HK$2 million in online "mining" operations. Upon attempting to cash out at the shop, the staff indicated that they had never seen her mobile app before and suspected she had been scammed, prompting her to call the authorities.
According to on-site reports, the victim had previously "mined" some cryptocurrency and arrived at the shop to exchange a string of keys for withdrawal. The shop owner pointed out that the cryptocurrency exchange she used appeared to be a fraudulent website and assisted her in contacting the police.
The shop owner stated that they are not familiar with her platform in any case. The case suggests that the victim may have made payments to others for "mining" without fully understanding the risks involved, leading to her significant loss.
Authorities are treating the case as a fraud investigation and are urging the public to exercise caution when engaging in cryptocurrency investments.
