As the holiday season approaches, citizens planning to travel to the UK should be aware of new regulations. Starting tomorrow (Jan. 8), individuals from 48 countries and regions, including Hong Kong, must pay £10 (approximately HK$97) to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), whether they are visiting the UK or merely transiting.

When applying, travelers must upload their passport and a personal photo, along with answering various questions. The ETA is valid for two years, allowing stays of up to six months per visit. The UK government indicated that the ETA will enable authorities to pre-screen travelers' personal information, biometric data, and contact details to prevent potential security threats.

The new regulation applies to countries and regions such as the United States, Canada, Australia, Brazil, New Zealand, Chile, Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and South Korea, among others. Except for those holding visas that authorize them to live, work, or study in the UK, all other travelers must apply for the ETA in advance, even if they are only transiting.
