Caricature: International robbery
Panama on Tuesday (Dec. 31) celebrated the 25th anniversary of the handover of the Panama Canal, which had been under the control of the US for nearly a century. In his speech, Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino emphasized that the canal rightfully and permanently belongs to Panama.
However, US President-elect Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to reclaim control of the Panama Canal after taking office. He accused Panama of charging excessive transit fees for US naval and commercial ships, calling it unfair to the US. Trump warned that if Panama fails to adhere to the legal and moral principles outlined during the canal's handover, the US will demand its return.
