S. Korean presidential security chiefs under investigation for obstructing official duties
The South Korean Joint Investigation Headquarters, composed of the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) and the police, announced on Jan. 3 that it has opened a case against the head and deputy head of the Presidential Security Service. They are under investigation for allegedly obstructing the execution of special official duties, specifically during the attempted enforcement of an arrest warrant for suspended President Yoon Suk-yeol.
The investigation marks a significant expansion of the probe into Yoon and his associates, now targeting senior officials within the Presidential Security Service. According to reports, the head of the security service refused to allow investigators to search the presidential residence when presented with the arrest warrant. This refusal underscores the deepening standoff between the security service and the investigation team.
Yoon's legal team has previously dismissed the arrest warrant as "illegal" and vowed to take legal action against the investigators. Analysts suggest that the decision to investigate the top officials of the Presidential Security Service may further weaken Yoon's political standing and reduce resistance to any subsequent arrest attempts.
