In an interview with Hong Kong Wen Wei Po yesterday (Jan. 2), the Secretary for Transport and Logistics, Mabel Chan, said that the "Northbound Travel for Hong Kong Vehicles" scheme was very popular, with an average of 70,000 and 12,000 vehicle trips traveling to and from Guangdong through the scheme every day.
She disclosed that she is closely exploring with the relevant mainland authorities the arrangements for implementing the "Southbound Travel for Guangdong Vehicles" scheme.
Some LegCo members considered it necessary for the two authorities to increase the number of boundary crossing clearance counters and optimize the use of the bridge capacity to avoid causing traffic congestion, she said.
The Transport Department (TD) announced yesterday that the governments of Guangdong and Hong Kong have agreed to increase the daily quota of"Northbound Travel for Hong Kong Vehicles" to 500 with immediate effect.
Chan has also repeatedly emphasized innovation and reform.
"In respect of long-term transport infrastructure planning, a total of six heavy railways and four medium-capacity intelligent green mass transit systems in Hong Kong are currently under construction at the preparatory stage, which is a huge amount of work."
In order to accomplish the construction targets with limited resources, she proposed that consideration could be given to introducing the latest mass transit technologies from the Mainland; and individual procedures or even synchronization of multiple steps in the planning process could be compressed to save time.
