Exhibition Highlights

  • Duration: The exhibition will run until May 5 in Shanxi.
  • Artworks: Visitors can expect a diverse collection, including full-body statues, busts, marble relief sculptures, and artifacts representing iconic figures such as Zeus, Athena, and Apollo.
  • Additional Artifacts: The display also includes sarcophagus panels and Greek pottery, providing a rich, immersive experience of the ancient world.

Sandra Penketh, NML's executive director of collections and research, expressed pride in presenting this exhibition to the Chinese public, emphasizing the historical and aesthetic significance of the classical Roman sculptures on display.

The theme of the exhibition, "Classical and Glory," aims to highlight the artistic achievements of ancient Greek and Roman cultures. Following its run in Shanxi, the exhibition is expected to travel to Sichuan Province and Shanghai.

Liu Qiuyi, one of over 300 attendees at the exhibition's preview, was captivated by the exquisite representation of the human form in the sculptures. A standout piece is a statue of Apollo from the Roman period, depicted in a moment of poised intensity as he prepares to strike a lizard.

Museum guide An Jing noted that this statue reflects the style of Praxiteles, a renowned Greek sculptor from the 4th century BC, exemplifying the enduring influence of Greek art on Roman sculptures.

Zhang Huiguo, deputy curator of the Shanxi Museum, remarked on the importance of promoting cultural exchange. He highlighted that sharing foreign cultures with domestic audiences, along with showcasing Chinese civilization globally, fosters interaction and understanding among diverse world civilizations.
