US President Joe Biden on Sunday (Dec. 29) declared Jan. 9 a national day of mourning for former president Jimmy Carter, calling on Americans to visit their places of worship to "pay homage" to the late US leader.
He has scheduled a state funeral in Washington for Carter on Jan. 9.
Born on October 1, 1924, in Georgia, Carter was the longest-lived former US president and held the record for the longest marriage of any US president. According to his wishes, he will be buried in his hometown of Plains, next to his wife, Rosalynn, who passed away in November 2023 after 77 years of marriage.
