Starting at midnight on Dec. 29, Hong Kong's Transport Department (TD) will launch a pilot "smart motorway" initiative on the southbound lanes of the Ting Kau Bridge, heading towards Tsing Yi. The intelligent system will monitor real-time traffic conditions, detect anomalies, and manage traffic incidents. The project also aims to collect data to evaluate its effectiveness and develop strategies for future expansion.
According to the TD, the smart system can quickly detect traffic accidents and adjust lane control signals and speed limit signs accordingly. Real-time traffic updates will be displayed on variable message signs to alert drivers. Additionally, field personnel will be able to use the road shoulder to divert traffic, alleviating congestion caused by accidents.
