Chung Ying Street Checkpoint in Sha Tau Kok launches facial recognition pilot program
The Sha Tau Kok Checkpoint has introduced a facial recognition pilot program, allowing individuals with valid restricted zone permits to enter and exit after pre-registration, eliminating the need to stop and show their permits.
This afternoon (Dec. 23), the government held an inauguration ceremony for the checkpoint, attended by officials including Chief Secretary for Administration Eric Chan. In his speech, Chan described the new facility as making the border crossing more convenient. He noted that other entry and exit points may utilize similar technology in the future to assist with immigration checks, which could enhance the ability to manage passenger flow.
Chan also stated that the government will explore the application of this technology in conjunction with future tourism developments on Chung Ying Street. Individuals holding valid restricted zone permits for Chung Ying Street will be able to use the no-touch lane after pre-registering.
He hopes that this pilot program will replace manual checks with innovative technology, facilitating the movement of people at the checkpoint and showcasing Hong Kong's digital technology level as an international metropolis.
