A two-month review: Industry adaptation to HK's disposable plastic products regulation
Following the end of the adaptation period on Oct. 21, Hong Kong's new regulation on disposable plastic products has been in effect for two months. The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) has received 62 complaints and reports related to the regulation, with 33 cases resulting in written warnings. Two restaurant operators have been fined HK$2,000 each for non-compliance.
The EPD stated that it has investigated all complaints and reports. Of the 33 cases that received warnings, these establishments failed to comply after multiple rounds of education and promotion, resulting in the issuance of warnings requiring corrective action within ten working days. For two restaurants that continued to violate the regulations, the EPD issued fixed penalty notices.
A spokesperson noted that since the end of the six-month adaptation period, the industry has largely complied with the new regulations and has made necessary adjustments in business operations. Data reviewed two months after the adaptation period shows that most violations were corrected quickly, with only two persistent cases requiring penalty notices. The EPD will continue its educational outreach and closely monitor compliance, aiming to foster a culture of reducing plastic use in collaboration with the industry and the public.
