CGTN's poll: Macao demonstrates vitality of 'one country, two systems' to world

As the 25th anniversary of the Macao Special Administrative Region is approaching, a survey conducted by CGTN in collaboration with the Macao Research Centre, involving 1,551 respondents from Macao, indicates strong affirmation of the successful implementation of "one country, two systems" in the region. Respondents generally believe it is the best system for addressing similar issues and maintaining long-term prosperity and stability.

In terms of satisfaction with Macao's socio-economic development, 93.9% of respondents approved of the performance of the Macao SAR government in recent years. Additionally, 91.9% stated that the political rights and freedoms of the people in Macao are well protected, and 90.8% praised the significant improvement in social welfare.

The satisfaction and happiness of Macao respondents reflect the remarkable progress in the region's socio-economic development over the past 25 years.

Data shows that Macao's GDP has grown 7.3 times from 1999 to 2023. In 2023, trade between the mainland and Macao reached $3.84 billion, an increase of 4.3 times compared to before 1999. By October of this year, direct investment from the mainland into Macao reached $14.19 billion.

The survey revealed that 94.3% of respondents believe that the strong support from the motherland has been crucial for Macao's prosperous development, while 92.7% feel that the connection between Macao and the mainland has become increasingly close.

With the support of the central government, Macao has established stable economic and cultural relations with over 120 countries and regions, and the number of international organizations and institutions Macao is involved with has risen to over 190, having obtained visa-free or visa-on-arrival treatment from 147 countries and regions. In this context, 92.5% of respondents believe that being supported by the motherland and connected to the world is a significant advantage for Macao.

In a survey assessing recognition of China's modernization development concepts and achievements, respondents rated various fields, including technological innovation, cultural development, social security, and education, with scores exceeding 7 out of 10.

Furthermore, 93% of respondents indicated that since Macao's integration into the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, there has been an increase in visitors, improvement in personnel exchanges, and more investment attracted to Macao.

Additionally, 93.8% believe that China's modernization development provides significant opportunities for Macao. 93.3% expressed confidence in the central government's commitment to maintaining Macao's long-term prosperity and stability. 92.6% are optimistic about Macao's future development prospects.
