To bolster overall regional security, the Hong Kong police launched the Crime Hotspot CCTV Installation Program in April this year, a collaborative effort between the Police Department and various government agencies to install closed-circuit television cameras in public areas.
As of December 17, 2024, the police have installed 612 sets of CCTV cameras, roughly meeting this year's installation target. They continue to communicate with stakeholders to ensure the completion of the goal of installing 2,000 sets of CCTV cameras by the end of 2025 and aim to install 6,000 to 7,000 sets by 2027.
Senior Superintendent Leung Ming Leung of the Police Operations Bureau stated at a recent meeting that the program had shown significant effectiveness, providing crucial leads in 97 criminal cases, including murders and arson.
On Monday evening, a man was attacked by an unknown woman with a knife, resulting in a finger injury, on Kweilin Street in Sham Shui Po. After the attack, the woman rambled incoherently before fleeing the scene, prompting the victim to seek police assistance. Utilizing the newly installed CCTV cameras, the police arrested a 41-year-old woman in Apliu Street yesterday in connection with the incident. She is suspected of "assault causing bodily harm" and is currently detained for investigation.
