On the afternoon of Dec. 11, an explosion and fire occurred at a high-rise residential unit in Block 1, Phase 2 of Yue Fu, located in the Nanshan District, Shenzhen, just 4 kilometers from the Shenzhen Bay Port.
Video footage from the scene showed flames spreading across multiple floors, with severe damage to the exterior and shattered windows. One person fell while attempting to escape the fire.
According to the authorities, as of 6 p.m. on Dec. 11, the incident resulted in one death, with no other injuries reported. The cause of the accident is under further investigation.
"The shockwave from the explosion was so strong that it could be felt in the nearby landmark building China Resources Tower." said a witness.
Ms. Wen, who works in the nearby Zhongjin Building, recounted that the incident occurred around 3 p.m. "There was a loud explosion, and I could feel the building shaking. Things around me fell, and I was startled."
Initially, everyone thought something had fallen, but it wasn't until they heard the sound of ambulances that they realized it was an explosion.
"The firefighters responded very quickly." She said.
On that day, nearly a hundred firefighters and several drones were dispatched, and all residents of the building were evacuated. That evening, some homeowners were accommodated at the Andaz Hotel in Shenzhen Bay.
Ms. Zhou expressed her distress, saying, "I can't go home tonight; I have to stay in a hotel." She explained that during the evacuation, they couldn't use the elevators and had to descend via the stairs, only managing to grab her phone and valuables before leaving. "I'll stay in the hotel tonight and wait for further updates."
Since Shenzhen Bay MixC is directly beneath the affected building, which includes residential and commercial facilities, the reporter observed that stores like Starbucks were closed around 7 p.m.
