In response to a lawmaker's inquiry about meeting the growing demand for personalized point-to-point transport services due to population growth, Hong Kong's Secretary for Transport & Logistics, Mable Chan, stated that the government currently has no plans to issue additional taxi licenses.
Chan explained that while public transport ridership has been gradually recovering following the reopening of boundaries with the mainland, the taxi industry continues to face operational challenges, with a small number of taxis still idle.
She also addressed public concerns over taxi service quality. Chan highlighted that the results of the government's tender for new taxi fleet licenses were announced in July, with conditional approvals granted to five selected operators. These operators are now preparing their services, with operations expected to gradually commence by July next year.
