Exclusive | Ouyang Yu reveals Macao's multidimensional growth: From national education to cultural innovation
Ouyang Yu, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), recently reflected on the achievements of the past five years in an interview with DotDotNews. Under the Chief Executive's policy direction, the social and cultural sectors implemented Macao's Second Five-Year Plan and the strategy for moderate economic diversification, completing many key initiatives during this period.
Ouyang highlighted several major accomplishments, including enhancing national security education, improving the quality of education and healthcare services, expanding cultural and sports industries, and fostering talent development.
On the education front, the Macao government revised curriculum regulations and introduced national security education materials for students from kindergarten to university. This ensured that education on the Constitution and Macao's Basic Law was integrated into all undergraduate programs.
Macao aligned with its "One Centre, One Platform, One Base" strategy to promote the integration of culture, sports, and tourism in cultural and sports development. Macao was awarded the title of China's "East Asian Cultural City 2025" with the highest score. To support its growing entertainment industry, the government established a coordination group for large-scale performance events. It introduced an outdoor venue capable of accommodating over 50,000 people, enhancing the city's infrastructure as a cultural and performance hub.
Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic over the past five years, the Macao government persisted in optimizing public services and addressing residents' basic needs, improving their well-being and satisfaction. At the same time, the government seized new opportunities emerging from the challenges, focusing on healthcare, education, culture, and sports to support the city's economic diversification and meet modern demands. These efforts provide a solid foundation for Macao's sustainable development and its residents' future prosperity.
