Temperatures to significantly drop in following days due to northeast monsoon: HKO
A northeast monsoon is expected to reach the southern coast of South China tonight (Dec. 11), the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) stated.
The temperature in Hong Kong will gradually decrease from the latter part of this week to the beginning of next week, with mornings and evenings becoming quite cool.
This, according to HKO, will likely break the record for the lowest temperature since the beginning of winter this year, with temperatures in the New Territories expected to be two to three degrees lower than in urban areas, reaching a cold level.
The Observatory mentioned that it will still be warm during the day today, but as the northeast monsoon arrives in the evening, the wind will shift to the north, signaling the beginning of cooler weather. Over the next few days, temperatures will progressively drop, especially in the New Territories, which may reach cold levels.
However, the lowest temperatures in urban areas are still uncertain. Regarding the possibility of freezing rain, HKO assessed that there is a low chance of rain during this cold air mass passage, although some computer forecast models predict light rain near Hong Kong.
The Observatory advises the public to stay warm, prepare suitable cold-weather clothing, and check on elderly individuals living alone or those with chronic illnesses to see if they need assistance.
