Shortage of elevator technicians in HK: 6,000 workers for 74,000 elevators?

According to the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, there are currently about 74,000 elevators in Hong Kong, an increase of approximately 4,000 over the past four years, with an average annual growth of 1,000. However, the number of registered elevator engineers increased by only 149 last year, highlighting a significant gap.

The government's Report on 2023 Manpower Projection indicates that the shortage of skilled technicians is particularly severe, with a projected shortfall of 60,000 by 2028, accounting for over one-third of the total manpower shortage, including elevator and escalator technicians.

The Lift and Escalator Contractors Association pointed out that the manpower shortage causes numerous issues, not only related to elevator safety but also resulting in longer repair times.

Training a qualified elevator technician is a lengthy process. Initially, workers must start as apprentices for four years, and after completing that period, they must work with a master for another year before officially starting to work. However, the salary for fresh workers is only about HK$16,000, which is not commensurate with the time and skill required, making it difficult to attract young people to the industry.
