President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to pardon individuals involved in the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riots. Speaking in an interview aired by NBC on Dec. 8, Trump stated "I'm going to be acting very quickly, first day."
Trump is set to be inaugurated on Jan. 20 next year.
However, Trump emphasized that not all individuals involved in the riots would receive clemency. If the individuals had acted "radical" or "crazy" during the assault, they probably wouldn't be pardoned.
The Capitol riots occurred on Jan. 6, 2021, following the 2020 presidential election, which Trump lost to Democrat Joe Biden. Trump, a Republican, refused to concede defeat, claiming widespread voter fraud. On that day, a large group of Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol, resulting in injuries, fatalities, and property damage.
The incident has fueled sharp political divisions between Democrats and Republicans over the years. According to US media reports, at least 1,572 individuals have been charged in connection with the riots, with over 1,250 pleading guilty or being convicted. So far, at least 645 rioters have been sentenced to prison.
