HK to Introduce new humanities subject in primary schools to enhance national identity
The Hong Kong Legislative Council held a meeting today (Dec. 6) to discuss the progress of implementing national and national security education in schools. Secretary for Education, Dr. Choi Yuk-lin announced that all benchmarks for strengthening national education in schools have been achieved.
She confirmed that elements of patriotism and national security education are already integrated into the existing curricula for kindergarten, primary, and secondary schools. Starting next academic year, a new humanities subject will be introduced in primary schools, enriching the curriculum with Chinese culture, national history, and geography to bolster students' national identity.
During the meeting, some LegCo members expressed concerns over a recent external assessment report revealing that certain special schools have yet to fully implement national security education. They urged the bureau to provide additional support.
Choi responded by stating that the evaluation focused not only on national security education but also on areas for improvement or commendable practices across schools. She agreed to enhance support for students with special education needs and emphasized the importance of teacher training in this regard.
