Not An Outsider EP17 | UK teacher discovers true flavors of Guangxi: 'Luosifen is my ultimate comfort food'
"A small bowl, add duck feet, add tofu!" This blonde girl ordering Liuzhou Luosifen (Liuzhou river snail rice noodles) in authentic Guangxi dialect is Sophie from the UK, who has been living in Liuzhou for 12 years. She teaches foreign languages at the Liuzhou Institute of Technology and is also an internet influencer with 170,000 followers. Growing up in a family passionate about food culture, her parents often took her on culinary adventures. When she first arrived in Liuzhou on May 1, 2012, she planned to stay for just six months. Now, after 12 years, she's a seasoned "Guangxi local."
Last year, Sophie brought back two large boxes of packaged Liuzhou Luosifen to the UK during a family visit. She shared a humorous video on social media of her family eating Luosifen with forks, vividly showcasing the delights of Chinese cuisine and highlighting the uniqueness of Liuzhou Luosifen along with her personal experiences. The video quickly went viral, attracting a wave of likes and sparking curiosity among viewers, with her "eating Luosifen" video surpassing 100 million views.
Sophie's humorous style and enthusiasm for local culture effectively convey her story about Liuzhou Luosifen to a global audience. She remarked, "My Chinese now has a snails rice noodle flavor!" During her visit, Sophie realized that after returning to the UK, she had become unaccustomed to Western food and missed the late-night food culture of her hometown. "It seems I've turned into a 'Liuzhou girl,' truly blending into life in Guangxi," she joked.
Sophie frequently shares updates about the changes in Guangxi on social media: Nanning has opened a subway, Liuzhou has car-sharing services, and Hechi airport is built on a mountaintop, among other developments. She also shares her exciting experiences in Guangxi. "I've discovered that people in Guangxi love food and creativity, transforming street delicacies like Liuzhou Luosifen, rice noodles, and Guilin rice noodles into convenient packaged products, allowing people around the world to enjoy Guangxi flavors and creating a billion-dollar industry in the process," Sophie noted.
