Lao Gan Ma makes Guardian's Christmas wish list: Creative ways for foreigners to enjoy this chili sauces
Lao Gan Ma, a brand of chili sauces made in China, makes the UK Guardian's Christmas wish list.
What are on the Christmas wish lists of famous chefs and food writers? The Guardian claims that one of their favorite presents this year is Lao Gan Ma crispy chili in oil.
"I love Lao Gan Ma crispy chili in oil, which I get from WaNaHong. It's not too expensive, it's super tasty, and it goes with everything — it's on preorder in my basket," said Tom Kerridge, chef, restaurateur and author of Pub Kitchen.
This isn't the first time it's been in the foreign media.
Huge in China, Lao Gan Ma's crispy chili oils also have a passionate following among Western food geeks. The original fried onion and Guizhou chili oil is the cult classic (warm heat, incredible savory depth), but the black bean version ("God tier!" says Sam Grainger, the executive chef at Belzan in Liverpool) is now the connoisseur's choice.
What are some creative ways for foreign people to eat with Lao Gan Ma?
Lao Gan Ma is now not just the preferred beverage of young people in China, but its allure is irresistible to people worldwide, with a daily production of 3 million bottles and sales to 160 nations and regions.
