Yesterday (Nov. 26), a letter from US House members to the US Treasury Secretary maliciously accused and denigrated the reputation of Hong Kong as an international financial center. The SAR government strongly expressed its dissatisfaction and firm opposition to this. Today (Nov. 27), several citizen groups demonstrated at the Consulate General of the United States, Hong Kong and Macao to protest against the unfounded accusations and smears made by American politicians.

A representative of the citizen groups stated that after seeing media reports about members of the US House of Representatives openly writing to the US Treasury Secretary, baselessly accusing and denigrating the reputation of Hong Kong as an international financial center, and smearing the "one country, two systems" principle, they strongly condemn these actions. He also pointed out that Hong Kong's status as an international financial center was not built overnight but was established through years of effort and development.

"Hong Kong possesses a high level of rule of law and superior business conditions, as demonstrated by the recent Global Financial Leaders' Investment Summit, where the participation of global financial leaders reflects the international community's trust and support for Hong Kong. Citizens do not want this trust to be shaken by external interference," he said.

The representative stated that US politicians should face the historical reality of Hong Kong's return to China, stop smearing Hong Kong, and cease applying pressure. As Hong Kong citizens, they firmly believe that "one country, two systems" is the best guarantee for Hong Kong's future development. They strongly demand that relevant American individuals respect national sovereignty, respect Hong Kong's financial status, and cease interfering with and accusing Hong Kong.

Another citizen group stated that the content of the letter maliciously defamed Hong Kong as a center for violating US trade controls, exporting prohibited Western technology to sanctioned countries, and playing a key role in connecting "authoritarian regimes."

According to them, Hong Kong is an international metropolis with a sound legal system and a forward-looking position as a global financial center. It is not as those members casually claim without evidence; fabrications without factual basis are simply "rumors," aiming to impact Hong Kong's international financial center status.

The citizens express strong dissatisfaction with the US meddling in financial and trade matters, making false accusations and malicious criticisms against Hong Kong, while also disregarding and violating international trade laws and regulations, disrupting the order of international financial trade.

"If any harm is caused to the Hong Kong economy as a result, the Hong Kong government must demand that the US provide Hong Kong with appropriate compensation!"
