New name of giant pandas gifted by central govt to be announced on Dec. 7
A pair of giant pandas gifted to Hong Kong by the central government have been in Hong Kong for two months and are now undergoing acclimatization training. The Chief Executive, John Lee, announced today (Dec. 27) that the Hong Kong government and Ocean Park will hold a ceremony for the unveiling of the giant pandas on Dec. 7, and the pandas will be officially introduced to the public the following day (Dec. 8).
Lee said that he and his wife, together with the Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, Kevin Yeung, visited the Park earlier and saw a pair of energetic and active giant pandas.
"New elements and environmental enrichment have been added to the Hong Kong Jockey Club Sichuan Treasures. The pair of pandas has adapted quickly to the new environment and are in good condition," Lee said.
Lee added that the naming and drawing competitions for the giant pandas organized by the Cultural, Sports and Tourism Bureau have been closed, and the Park has received more than 22,600 naming proposals and 3,000 drawing entries. The results of the two competitions mentioned above will be announced together with the ceremony for the unveiling of the giant pandas.
