FIBA 3x3 World Tour Final concludes at Victoria Park on Nov. 24, solidifying HK's status as Asian sports hub
The FIBA 3x3 World Tour Final, the first-ever "M" mark event hosted by Hong Kong, successfully concluded at Victoria Park on Nov. 24. Following the Olympic qualifying tournament, Hong Kong was specially invited to be the host city for this year's ultimate FIBA 3x3 professional season final.
This inaugural year-end championship marks a significant achievement for Hong Kong in attracting international-level sports events, enriching local sports activities and further solidifying its status as an Asian sports hub.
The host team, Team Hong Kong, made two appearances during the qualification rounds on the evening of November 22. Despite the assistance of Olympic gold medalist Agnis Čavars, they were unable to advance past Princeton and Kandawa in the group stage.
After the matches, Čavars expressed that he was not discouraged, as the primary goal of participating this time was to learn from the world's top teams. He praised his teammates for their outstanding performance in the matches, demonstrating that Team Hong Kong has the capability to compete with world-class teams.
The venue was packed with spectators, and many gathered outside to watch the live broadcast on large screens, showcasing the enthusiastic support of Hong Kong citizens for international sports events. The tournament continued the concept of "Sportertainment", with the "3x3 VILLAGE" carnival area featuring popular food stalls. For the first time, the event invited the Lai Chi Kok Amusement Park to set up stalls, allowing children and adults to experience simple joy in a lively atmosphere.
Additionally, the newly introduced handmade cultural market showcased local creativity, providing a richer and more diverse experience for attendees. The collaboration with Cheung Chau Bun Festival was also a highlight, which brought traditional elements to Victoria Park and launched a type of bun that infused the vitality and cultural essence of Hong Kong's traditional festivals into the international event, showcasing the unique charm of the fusion of different cultures.
Furthermore, this year's event, in partnership with the Hong Kong Playground Association and the Hong Kong Rope Skipping Association, created a vibrant urban sports zone featuring innovative activities like pickleball, baseball, axe throwing, and freestyle rope skipping, attracting numerous participants. There were long queues at the mini basketball machines and public 3x3 basketball courts, with streetball influencers from the mainland traveling specifically to join the event and exchange skills with local basketball enthusiasts.
