2 mn people sign petition for new election against Labor's broken election promises
A petition on Parliament's website accusing Labor of breaking promises and calling for a new general election has gathered more than 2 million signatures - the third highest since 2010.
The petition has got more than 100,000 signatures, so the subject is likely to be debated in Parliament, but would not trigger a new election.
The petition was created by Michael Westwood, a pub landlord, on the parliamentary website on October 31. He is extremely disappointed with the performance of the Labor government, which has failed to deliver on its campaign promises, and accuses the party of betraying the electorate, as well as being inspired by the results of the U.S. presidential election to believe that, with unity and solidarity, changes can be made through the ballot box.
The petition was reposted by a number of right-wing politicians in the UK, and also received support from different sectors, including veteran British movie star Michael Caine and Elon Musk, a tycoon who will join Trump's administration.
During the election campaign, the Labor Party stated that it would not raise taxes on the working class, but the Chancellor of the Exchequer proposed to raise taxes by 40 billion pounds, including the introduction of a farmer's inheritance tax and the reduction of winter fuel subsidies, which has been criticized by the outside world. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that the government has made difficult decisions in the first budget that will affect many people, and also said that he is "not that surprised" that some people who did not vote Labour in the last election want a "re-run" of the poll.
