More than 17,000 non-local undergraduates account for over 20% of places in this academic year: Christine Choi
In response to an oral question raised by a Legislative Council member today (Nov. 20), Secretary for Education Christine Choi said that the Policy Address proposes to relax the quota for non-local students in publicly-funded institutions to 40%.
According to the understanding of the University Grants Committee (UGC), the number of non-local students taking publicly-funded bachelor's degree programs in the current academic year has increased to more than 17,000, which is equivalent to 23% of the total number of local places. The government is pleased to see universities admitting more non-local students to study in Hong Kong, Choi said.
Choi continued to point out that in the last academic year, a total of 64,000 non-local students were enrolled in full-time publicly-funded and self-financing post-secondary programs in Hong Kong, of which there were about 23,000 non-local students in the eight universities, of which 60% of the non-local students enrolled in first-degree programs came from more than 100 countries or regions, with the Mainland, Macao and Taiwan being the major ones.
Choi said that all institutions will calculate the number of non-local students independently, and the UGC will explain the calculation methodology to the institutions.
