Chinese Embassy in UK responds to erroneous remarks made by British official regarding HK
A British official stated on Nov. 19, making unwarranted comments on the sentence delivered by the Court of First Instance of Hong Kong on a conspiracy to commit subversion case and endorsing the convicted persons. In response, the Embassy spokesperson said that Hong Kong is a society that is under the rule of law.
"It is a basic principle that laws must be followed and violations must be punished. The convicted persons, including Benny Tai Yiu-ting, engaged in illegal activities under the pretext of 'democracy'. They conspired to subvert the state power and should be punished by law. The court has conducted the sentencing in accordance with the law and is beyond reproach."
According to the spokesperson, the British official ignored basic facts, made irresponsible remarks on the sentencing, and spoke for lawbreakers. This runs counter to the spirit of the rule of law and constitutes gross interference in Hong Kong affairs, which are China's internal affairs.
"China strongly rejects this and urges the British side to immediately stop such wrongful words and deeds."
The Chinese central government firmly supports the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in safeguarding national security and punishing all kinds of activities that endanger national security in accordance with the law. No attempt by external forces to interfere in Hong Kong's judicial cases or smear and undermine the rule of law will succeed.
