Govt to reclaim Tai Lam Tunnel next year, with toll fees to be significantly reduced: Lam Sai-hung
The franchise for the Tai Lam Tunnel will expire at the end of May next year, and the government will reclaim it to implement a new toll scheme.
It is said that the government is initially inclined to adopt a time-based charging scheme. The Secretary for Transport and Logistics, Lam Sai-hung, stated today (Nov. 19) that time-based charging is one of the options.
Lam emphasized that the government has two objectives, including significantly reducing tunnel fees to allow the public to enjoy the tunnel services, while also maintaining some control over the toll levels to prevent them from being set too low, which may lead to increased congestion.
He mentioned that the government will continue to carefully listen to public opinions, with the hope of submitting a bill related to the reclamation of the Tai Lam Tunnel by the end of this year.
In addition, three franchised bus companies have submitted fare increase applications to the government, with KMB applying for a 6.5% increase, Citybus applying for a 9.5% increase, and New Lantao Bus applying for a 6.5% increase.
Lam said the government will handle the applications according to procedures. He also acknowledged public concerns regarding the proposed increases and stated that the government would consider several factors, including the public's ability to accept the increases, the financial situation of the bus companies, and the level of service provided.
