From ARJ21 to C909: COMAC announces standardization of aircraft product names at Airshow China
On the first day of the 15th China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition (Airshow China), the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) held a product release conference, announcing that the ARJ21 aircraft will now carry the commercial name C909, standardizing the naming convention for its aircraft products to "Comac + Model Number." Consequently, COMAC's three commercial aircraft are now named "Comac C909," "Comac C919," and "Comac C929."
According to COMAC, since the C909 aircraft began commercial operations in 2016, it has delivered a total of 150 units and safely transported over 17 million passengers. The C909 offers various cabin configurations, including 78-seat two-class, 90-seat all-economy, and high-density options with 95 or 97 seats. It possesses excellent takeoff and landing performance on short, narrow runways, as well as in high-altitude, high-temperature, and windy conditions, making it well-suited for operations in China's border regions and overseas areas such as Southeast Asia and Africa. The C909 is particularly apt for building route networks from regional or secondary hub airports, providing supplemental capacity to major hub airports. Additionally, the C909 can operate commercial flights using up to 50% blended SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel), catering to diverse customer needs.
COMAC stated that as large aircraft transition from development to the industrialization phase, the scale and series development are steadily advancing, with more domestically produced commercial aircraft entering service. The standardized naming of aircraft products will help shape a series of product images, further enhancing product recognition and brand influence.
According to CCTV News, COMAC today signed a firm order for 60 C919 aircraft and 40 C909 aircraft with HNA Group. Additionally, COMAC signed an order with Colorful Guizhou Airlines for 30 C909 aircraft, which includes 20 firm orders and 10 letters of intent.
