See by IC: Chip giants gather at CIIE to capitalize on new industrialization
At 2024 China International Import Exhibition (CIIE), more global leading high-tech companies are utilizing the Expo's platform to engage with the Chinese market and display their latest technologies.
On Nov. 5, during a forum at the Expo, Frank Meng Pu, Chairman of Qualcomm China, pointed out that key technologies represented by 5G and AI are driving digital transformation and innovative development across various industries. Qualcomm's deep collaboration with industry partners has expanded from smartphones to multiple fields, including PCs, smart connected vehicles, the Internet of Things (IoT), and industrial manufacturing.
According to Meng, Qualcomm will continue to use technological innovation as an engine to promote a new industrialization process and jointly shape an innovation-driven industrial era. Micron Technology has also established a dedicated area showcasing its development in China, prominently displaying the slogan "We are committed to investing in China."
Expanding Ecosystems and Sharing New Opportunities
At the Expo, our journalists observed that industry leaders such as Qualcomm, AMD, Synopsys, and SK Hynix were participating, with many tech companies stating that the expo has become an important bridge for expanding their business in China.
At Qualcomm's booth, professional attendees engaged in real-time voice conversations, with AI providing instant responses in both text and speech. The smartphone used for this demonstration is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile platform, the most powerful and fastest mobile system-on-chip to date.
"The Expo has become an important bridge for many companies to expand their business in China. With the dual empowerment of 5G-Advanced and AI, Qualcomm's collaborations with industry partners are continuously expanding from mobile phones to automotive, PCs, extended reality (XR), IoT, and more. The expo will also help Qualcomm deepen and broaden its cooperation with Chinese industry partners," said Meng. He emphasized Qualcomm's commitment to building a cooperative, win-win, and prosperous industrial ecosystem with partners in China.
This year's expo featured new technology displays from leading companies like Synopsys and SK Group. For instance, Synopsys showcased its full-stack AI-driven Electronic Design Automation (EDA) solutions, aiming to explore innovations at the intersection of AI and EDA. SK Hynix also exhibited several advanced products designed for AI applications. Meanwhile, Micron Technology set up a dedicated area for its development in China, highlighting that China has become one of Micron's largest global markets. Currently, Micron has operations in Shanghai, Beijing, and Shenzhen, as noted on their booth: "We are committed to investing in China." These tech giants are casting their votes with their feet, sharing and winning together on the Expo stage.
AMD, which showcased its fifth-generation EPYC processors for the first time in China, also hopes to meet more "new friends" through the expo.Pan Xiaoming, senior vice president of AMD and president of Greater China, remarked that China is one of AMD's important global markets. "The Expo provides us with a national-level platform for open communication, allowing us to meet more new friends and further expand our circle and ecosystem, sharing and discussing innovative achievements with both new and old friends."
Experts: "Tech Wars" May Hinder Industrial Collaboration
In an interview, Zhan Yubo, director of the Innovation Economy Research Center at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, stated that the global chip industry has formed a good collaborative division of labor. However, with rapid iterations in chip technology, he warned that a "tech war" could disrupt this well-established division. "From a theoretical standpoint, this is not the most effective method, as chip development requires the joint efforts of both upstream and downstream industries."
Zhan added that the participation of numerous tech giants at the Import Expo demonstrates the importance companies place on the Chinese market. "For this year's Import Expo, many chip giants are participating, clearly indicating the significance of the Chinese market from both market and enterprise perspectives."
